Setting up Solera

Quick start

These steps get a new store from install to a working wine catalog. Each one links to its full section below.

1. Add Solera from the Theme Store, then open Online Store › Themes › Customize.
2. Pick fonts, colors and your logo in Theme settings.
3. Create the wine metafields in Settings › Custom data › Products, using the keys in Wine data. This takes about ten minutes and is what makes the wine features work.
4. Fill in the wine fields on each product. The product page, product cards and wine sections pick them up automatically.
5. Create collections by country, wine type and dish, and build your menus.
6. Set the minimum age and legal note in Age verification, and check the alcohol sale rules for your country.

Theme settings

Open the theme editor and click the brush icon (Theme settings) to change settings that apply to the whole store.

Wine data

Solera reads wine details from product metafields in the custom namespace. Create these definitions once in Settings › Custom data › Products › Add definition. Use exactly the namespace and key shown; the name can be anything, in any language.

Every field is optional. When a field is empty, the part of the page that uses it is hidden, so a sparkling wine without tannins simply shows two bars instead of three.

Tasting bars

Body, tannins and acidity go from 1 (light) to 5 (full). They appear on product cards (turn off in Theme settings › Products) and in the Tasting profile block on the product page.

Pairings

Write one dish per entry, for example Barbecue, Aged cheese, Fish. Solera picks an icon from the dish name. It recognizes red meat and barbecue, lamb and roasts, poultry, pork, fish, seafood, cheese and charcuterie, pasta and risotto, mushrooms, vegetables and salads, spicy food, dessert and chocolate, in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Other dishes get a plate icon. You can also choose the icon by hand in the Dish picker and Wine pairings sections.

Menus and collections

Main menu

Choose the menu in the Header section. Items with sub-items open a large dropdown on desktop and a sliding panel on phones.

• Show as pills. Type the title of one submenu, for example By country, and its links appear as rounded country pills inside the dropdown.
• Menu feature. Add this block to show an image with a heading and link inside a dropdown. In Menu item, type the top-level item where it should appear, for example Wines.

Suggested collections

Automated collections keep themselves up to date. The demo store uses:

• By wine type: red, white, rosé. Condition: product type equals Red wine, and so on.
• By country: one collection per country, using a tag such as Uruguay. These feed the Shop by origin section and the country pills.
• By dish: barbecue, fish and seafood, pasta, cheese, desserts, using tags. These feed the Dish picker.
• On sale: products whose price is reduced (they have a compare-at price).

Create a Countries menu that links to each country collection. You can use it in the Shop by origin section and as the quick links in an empty cart.

Home page sections

Add sections with Add section in the theme editor. All of them can also be used on other pages.

Hero

Large image with text, side by side or with the text over the image. Pick a featured product to use its photo and link. Includes the rotating seal: a round label with your own text that can turn slowly.

Slideshow

Up to six slides, each with an image, an optional phone image, text and two buttons. Slides can change on their own every 4–12 seconds. Visitors can always pause them.

Scrolling strip

A thin band of short words that scrolls sideways, such as Free shipping · Tastings every Friday. It pauses on hover and has a pause button.

Featured collection

A product grid. Add more than one Tab block to let shoppers switch between collections.

Dish picker

"What are you eating tonight?" Each dish links to a collection of wines that go with it, with an icon and a wine count.

Shop by origin

A list of countries or regions taken from a menu, with a short description of each collection.

Image with text

Photo with a heading, text and buttons. Good for your shop's story.

Columns

Two to four columns, numbered or plain. Good for "How it works" or "Why buy from us".

Rich text

Heading, text, a quote and buttons, centered or left aligned.

FAQ

Questions that open and close. The first can start open.

Video

An uploaded video, or a YouTube or Vimeo link, with a cover image.

Contact form, Apps, Custom Liquid

A contact form with contact details, a space for app blocks, and a place for your own Liquid code.

Product page

The Product information section is made of blocks you can reorder, hide or remove. Most wine blocks fill themselves from the metafields, and each has its own fields to override a value for one product template.

Below the main section, the default product template adds three wine sections:

• Tasting story. As the visitor scrolls, a bottle pours a glass in the wine's color and the tasting notes appear one by one: color, aroma, palate and pairings.
• Where it comes from. A photo of the region with the region, country, vintage, aging and alcohol.
• Wine pairings. The dishes from the pairings metafield, with the serving temperature.

Then come product reviews (from your reviews app), "Complete the table" (complementary products set in Search & Discovery) and related products. A bar with the add to cart button appears at the bottom of the screen once the main button scrolls away. You can turn it off in the section settings.

Collections and search

• Filters come from the Search & Discovery app. Price, availability, product type and your wine metafields work well.
• Quick filter as pills. In the Product grid section, type the name of a filter (for example Country) to show its values as pills above the products.
• Choose products per page, columns on desktop, and one or two columns on phones.
• Search results use the same product cards, filters and sorting.

Cart and gift cards

• Cart drawer or page. Set in Theme settings › Cart. The drawer can suggest one product that goes with what is in the cart.
• Free shipping message. Set how many bottles qualify (for example 6). The cart shows how many are left. The theme only shows the message; create the free shipping rate itself in Settings › Shipping and delivery. Set it to 0 to hide the message.
• Empty cart. Pick a menu, such as your countries menu, to show quick links instead of a blank page.
• Gift cards. Turn on gift cards in Settings › Gift cards. Customers can send one to a recipient with a message and a delivery date. The gift card email page is styled to match the theme.

Motion

Solera moves in a few deliberate places. Visitors whose device asks for reduced motion always see the still version, whatever you choose here.

Age verification

When it is on, visitors are asked to confirm their age before seeing the store. Set the minimum age (18 to 21), how many days the answer is remembered, the heading (use [age] to insert the age), the text, a legal note, a logo and an optional background image.

The dialog is hidden while you work in the theme editor. Turn on Show in the theme editor to style it.

Languages

The theme's own text (buttons, labels, messages) comes in English and Spanish. To sell in another language, add it in Settings › Languages and translate your products, collections and pages with the free Translate & Adapt app. You can also change any theme text in Online Store › Themes › … › Edit default theme content.

The header and footer can show a language selector and a country/region selector. Turn them on in each section's settings.
